A YEAR OF FAITH CATECHESIS (by Fr. James H. Kroeger, M.M.))
Faith: God’s gracious gift
Succinctly stated, faithis a free gift from God, a grace, an undeserved beneficence bestowed gratuitously by a loving God. St Paul wasprofundly aware that he did not deserve to have faith and be an apostle. “But by God’s grace, that is what I am, and the grace that He gave me has not been fruitless.” (1 Cor 15:9-10)
We admit that one does not deserve or earn the gift of faith, yet we respond to God”s loving initiative by a free and personal act. Our response can be captured in three words, all beginning with the letter “r”.
Faith is all about recognizing God’s inestimable gift in sending His Son for our salvation.
With grateful heart, a Christian focusses on receiving the gift of faith and personally integrating it into one’s life.
The recognition and reception of the gift — particularly the person of Christ — overflowin concrete efforts to share this faith and love with others, reciprocating God’s love in Jesus through deeds of compassion and missionary service.
Faith: a special gift. . .our precious possession!
